JUDICIAL EXPERIENCE

With over two and one-half decades of legal experience, Judge Karahan understands the law from a broad perspective and puts into action an inherent philosophy of fairness and accountability.

After graduating in 1978 with honors from Florida State University Judge Karahan moved to Texas and has been a Houston resident for 30 years. He earned his law degree in 1983 from South Texas College of Law. Upon graduation, Judge Karahan became an Assistant District Attorney to Harris County District Attorney Johnny Holmes and tried over 100 jury trials. He also served on the Child Abuse Committee.

In 1987, the U.S. Attorney General appointed him to the position of Assistant U.S.

Attorney for the Southern District of Texas where he prosecuted federal cases in the major crimes and bank fraud sections. In 1989 Judge Karahan was an honored recipient of the U.S. Attorney General's Special Achievement Award for the successful prosecution and life incarceration of two FBI Top Ten fugitives.

Judge Karahan in 1991 served as litigation and compliance counsel to a Fortune 100 company before opening his own practice, Jay Karahan and Associates, in 1995. His private practice experience included over 100 civil and criminal trials and appeals. Judge Karahan was an adjunct professor at South Texas College of Law teaching trial advocacy from 1987 to 1996.

The Texas Board of Legal Specialization certifies Judge Karahan as a Criminal Law Specialist since 1988.

Elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006, Judge Karahan presides over Harris County Criminal Court-at-Law No. 8. He strives to motivate offenders to rehabilitate themselves to return to integrity with the community as productive members of society. In 2008, Judge Karahan helped launch and develop the DWI Court Program for Repeat Offenders, which he continues to oversee in Court 8 today. DWI Court is an intensive intervention and rehabilitation program for repeat offenders with alcohol and drug addictions, with the goal of eliminating probationer relapse and improving traffic safety. Judge Karahan meets with these probationers each month to evaluate, motivate and reward compliance. Judge Karahan is a frequent invited speaker at Houston area schools about the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse, and he welcomes students, local scout troops and civic groups into the courtroom for observation and discussions about the criminal justice system.

Judge Karahan is the proud father of son, Jason, 16. They are active members of St. Martin's Episcopal Church where Judge Karahan serves as an usher and as an Adult Christian Education teacher.
